How To Choose Interior Lighting Fixtures
Redecorating your home will likely include choosing new interior lighting fixtures that will match
the décor.
Lighting fixtures will do much more than simply illuminate the rooms in your home. Properly chosen
fixtures will enhance the décor of the room, add character and style as well as serve as accompaniments to the
design of the room. With multiple styles, colors and types of lighting fixtures from which to choose, some careful
consideration will be needed before making the final decision on which to install.
The first factor to consider is the room that will be remodeled. Kitchens, for example, are rooms
that are generally well lit and bright. Multiple lighting options can be exercised in this room; recessed lighting
over the stove and sink; pendant lights over an island or breakfast table and even track lighting around a snack
bar. Dining rooms are often more sedate and elegant in appearance; a chandelier is a good choice here. There are
many to choose from; crystal, stained glass, beaded, shell and metal. To create a comforting and relaxing
atmosphere, table lamps or free standing lamps are placed in living rooms, a place to kick back and feel
soothed.
In more private rooms such as bedrooms and bathrooms, the need to choose appropriate interior
lighting fixtures is equally as important. Our bedroom is often the one spot in the home to which we can retreat
and feel totally at ease. The lighting chosen for this room should represent that ability. Wall sconces create an
old world feel as well as intimate lighting. Night stand lamps can be operated by the flick of a wall light switch;
overhead lights can be equipped with dimmer switches to allow either full or muted lighting as needed. Bathrooms
likewise need to have each type of lighting. Bright lights on either side of the vanity mirror enable individuals
to shave, put on makeup or perform other grooming tasks. Softer lights such as a sconce can provide will enable a
soothing soak in the tub that can erase the stress of the day.
Other types of interior lighting fixtures can be
adapted to hallways, closets and stairwells as needed; subdued lighting in hallways is common while bright
illumination is desired in closets and stairways. The most important aspect to keep in mind when choosing the ideal
fixture is to match the type of lighting to the area being lit. Matching fixtures to the décor of the room will be
the bright spot of the redecorating process.
